Manga and Comics

The human race has been fascinated by stories of unseen and enigmatic forces since the dawn of storytelling itself. This is why the supernatural genre is one of the most popular in the entertainment industry.

The supernatural genre has been around in one form or another since the early days of entertainment, featuring elements of science fiction, fantasy, ghosts, demons, zombies, gods, vampires, and other unworldly entities.

If you've had enough of your human problems, there are worlds out there to escape to, where ghosts are real, demons are more literal, werewolves are not only real but sexy, and drinking of blood seems cool. Of course, we're talking, about the Supernatural; It sometimes borders on terror, yet other times it's light-hearted and humorous, even as it delves into the unexplainable, they open up a world of possibilities.

If you're looking for a break from the ordinary, this collection of some of the best supernatural webtoons ever is precisely what you need to start exploring the paranormal universe of the supernatural.

Without further ado, let's get right into it. Here's the Top 5 Supernatural Webtoon Originals!

duty after school by ilkwon ha supernatural webtoons originals review on otherworlds inc

Afterschool War Activities

Every now and then, we come across stories about a global invasion, and this series stands out among the many that I've read as it focuses less on supernatural entities and more on the characters and their emotions.

This series is underrated and does not receive the credit it deserves. It isn't some poorly written silly story. It has a lot of depth and substance, and it left me feeling both moved and devastated. This one deserves to be read.

Also known as Afterschool War Activities, this comic is a thrilling and heartbreaking story about a group of high school students who form a reserve battalion to aid in the protection of the country from Slime-like creatures. Forced to risk their lives against their will, how would a platoon of young, inexperienced soldiers survive?

And as things become more hazardous, it becomes evident how much they'll have to mature in order to survive. But are they truly able to? And how will they evolve in other ways along the way? Check it out to find out.

muted by miranda mundt supernatural webtoon originals review by otherworlds inc

Muted is a great way to delve into the witchy side of the supernatural, with an LGBTQ theme that was presented in a very appealing and non-cliched way. Everything about this webtoon is just incredible: the graphics, the plot, the characters. A true work of art!

Camille Severin, a teenage witch, must undergo a rite after turning 21 in order to maintain her family's line of prosperity. Unfortunately (or thankfully, perhaps), it goes horribly wrong, leading her into a rabbit hole of secrets about herself and her family. And, given Camille’s family's history of powerful witches, you can bet this will be a grand adventure.

hive by Kyusam Kim supernatural webtoon originals review by otherworlds inc

Another invasion narrative, but this time the world is being infested by massive oxygen-doped bees. I wouldn’t recommend it if you suffer from a severe case of entomophobia (Fear of ants).

With that out of the way, Hive is an intriguing, action-packed webtoon full of mysteries and surprises with well-developed characters and excellent visuals. At first glance, it appears to be another zombie apocalypse with enormous insects, but it's much more than that. It was one hell of a ride reading this comic!

The plot centers around Lee, an ordinary office worker who is primarily concerned with one thing: saving his family from the bug apocalypse.

The story started with a creepy, ominous apocalyptic vibe that kept me focused and engaged. I also love how the MC evolved from being a regular office worker to a monster who’d torment his victim for not answering a question right away. Our MC here, however, isn’t the greatest/ favorite, Mr. Gramps is. You've just got to love the old dude.

unholy blood by Lina Im / Jeonghyeon Kim supernatural webtoon originals

One of the few vampire stories done right, 'Unholy Blood' also known as white blood is not the traditional vampire romance story popularized by so many post-Twilight books and films. Although there is romance, it is secondary to the action and the main plotline, which is driven by the protagonist's quest to avenge her family against vampires. It's a thriller at heart, and a fine one at that, with nothing in the way of clichés and no obvious plot twists..

This story follows a girl, Hayan Park who has always desired to live a regular human life, but her chances of doing so were taken away by vampires. Forced to seek vengeance, she reveals her darkest secret in order to cleanse the world off pureblood vampires. She steps up to protect her loved ones, face her past, and exact her retribution with the help of a rising star in the local police department who turns out to be a vampire. But would she succeed?

The art style was one of the factors that drew me to this webtoon. This artwork is just breathtaking. The illustrator's style and the way everything is drawn, colored, and shaded are all very fascinating. Hayan Park, the main character, literally owns my heart; after all, who doesn't appreciate a strong and fierce heroine?! She's also very beautiful.

Honorable Mentions:

Don’t you find it ridiculous for a mermaid to need swimming lessons? That's exactly what piqued my attention to this particular webtoon and they didn’t disappoint. Swimming Lessons for a Mermaid by YONGCHAN will leave you speechless. The storytelling and twist are just on point, it's also really charming and humorous, and it includes one of the few love triangles that I enjoy.

If you're looking for a lighthearted webtoon with a supernatural twist, look no further. Love Advice from the Great Duke of Hell by unfins is the one for you. This webtoon is even stranger than its title suggests. Absolutely hilarious, and beneath the whole craziness there are some interesting twists hidden. It's Genius!

Want a rollercoaster ride of emotions that would shake your inside out? Dark Mortal by JeonYeok Lee will take you down that road. Yeah, it's dark and tragic, but it's also charming and full of family love. It’s a fantastic webtoon that is a master at manipulating emotions.

lalin's curse by Isakytm supernatural webtoons originals review on otherworlds inc

Lastly, Lalin’s curse, the fact that I binge-read the entire first season of this webtoon in a single day should speak enough about how engrossing it was to read. Looking forward to season 2!

Known for its dramatic twists, characters, and visuals, the first season of Lalin's Curse is no less than a true piece of genius. You're missing out big time if you haven't read this webtoon.

Throughout the story, we learn about a young lad named David, a skeptic of the supernatural, always on the watch for anomalies around him. Upon discovering something dreadful, he alongside his skeptical friends set out to investigate.

Because it's aimed at a younger audience, the visual style is kind of cute-spooky with a Supernatural vibe for kids, but I can assure you that it's fantastic for people of all ages. All of the characters are well-developed. This comic will have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through as you see friendships tested, curses cast, and murders committed.

Beginners Guide to Demon Slayer

Beginners Guide to Demon Slayer

Are you looking to start this particular series and want to get ample knowledge about it first? Or you’ve seen it and just want to be enlightened more about the series, then this piece is just for you.

Do keep in mind that this piece might contain spoilers. So, let’s get right into it! with the Beginners Guide to Demon Slayer!

Kimetsu no Yaiba

New Generation Shonen

Kimetsu no Yaiba, popularly known as Demon Slayer is a New Generation Shonen anime that aired in Spring '19. Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, produced by Ufotable studio (best known for their high-budget animation). An adaptation of the manga with the same name. Written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge.

In a short time, this anime has grown and won the heart of lots of fans and won the award for anime of the year in the year 2019. Also received praises for the animation and fight sequences. That’s to show the series is the real deal!

Later on, after the completion of season one. A sequel film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, was released in October 2020 and became the highest-grossing anime film and Japanese film of all time. Breaking the internet. A big kudos to everyone working on this show!

Narrative

Demon slayers, as the name suggests, are a group of samurai who hunt and kill demons. The tale revolves around a kind-hearted teen Tanjiro Kamado, who sets out to become a demon slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister Nezuko was turned into a demon. Traveling around in search of a cure to revert his sister into a human.

Demon Slayer Anime

kimetsu-no-yaiba-2

Setting

The events of Kimetsu no Yaiba are supposed to have occurred around 100 years ago, during Japan’s Taisho era (1912–1926). The Demon Slayer scenario is more of an old/current Japanese cultural setting, the sort where they sit on the floor and use futon beddings, as well as major-city Tokyo, where they have been significantly impacted by western technology and science, such as trains and electricity.

Creating a one-of-a-kind blend/mix that didn’t contradict the narrative and even added humorous relief. As shown in the scene where Tanjiro and his traveling buddies, Zenitsu and Inosuke, arrived in the big city and were unable to fit in. Roaming through Tokyo’s streets with their swords, completely enthralled by the surroundings.

In a world where demons still roamed the earth, devouring people. Demons, it appears, are former humans who traded their humanity for power. Possessing supernatural abilities such as super strength, magic, and regeneration in exchange for feeding on humans and their humanity as a whole, as well as the inability to stay under sunlight. It’s a little like the vampire story.

For generations, a secret society known as the Demon Slayer Corps has waged a secret war against demons to exorcise them.

Along with the powers the demons gain upon turning, they are also somewhat immortal as they can’t be killed by just any weapon but only with weapons crafted from an alloy known as Sun Steel, injected with poison extracted from wisteria flowers, or exposed to sunlight. Also, you need to be aiming for the head to truly kill a demon.

As previously stated, demons possess supernatural abilities, whereas demon slayers are completely human; nevertheless, they utilize special breathing techniques known as “Breathing Styles,” which provide them superhuman strength and resilience alongside other prowess.

Major Characters

Tanjiro kamado

Tanjiro is the series’ main protagonist, a kind teen voiced by Natsuki Hanae (Japanese) and Zach Aguilar (English). Tanjiro has a highly sharp nose that allows him to differentiate between a demon and a human, as well as a very hard head! His entire family was slain by a demon (Muzan), leaving just his sister, Nezuko, who was transformed into a demon.

As he set out on a quest to save and revert his sister to human. He studied to become a Demon Slayer, mastering the Water Breathing Style under the instruction of Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Water Hashira, Getting entangled in the demon slayer corps’ issues.

Nezuko Kamado

Nezuko, tanjiro younger sisters has been mentioned earlier in her brother's bio, so you already know about her. Voiced by Akari Kito (Japanese) and Abby Trott (English).

Nezuko was turned into a demon by Muzan. Her situation, however, was significantly different as she doesn’t act like a typical demon. Even though she has lost her humanity, she still has memories and feelings strong enough to prevent herself from killing Tanjiro, and she has been conditioned to protect humans and attack other demons. Nezuko, like other demons, has special abilities and is vulnerable to sunlight.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

Voiced by Hiro Shimono (Japanese) and Aleks Le (English).,

Zenitsu, One of Tanjiro's travel buddies. Coward by nature, frightened by literally everything. He hasn't reached his full potential as he only shows off his best combat skills when he's unconscious or in grave danger. I believe he will develop into a strong character once he discovers his full potential. He has exceptional hearing and fights with the Thunder Breathing technique.

Inosuke Hashibira character from beginners guide to demon slayer corps anime movie review by otherworlds inc

Inosuke Hashibira

Voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese) and Bryce Papenbrook (English).

Inosuke, the lousiest amongst Tanjiro and Zenitsu. was raised by wild animals and always wears his signature boar’s head. Always eager to jump into fights and hyped to challenge anybody he met, considering himself to be the strongest guy in the room. He fights with a self-taught Beast Breathing technique. Under the signature boar's head is a female-looking face that doesn’t suit the voice or charisma.

Demon Slayer Corps

As previously stated, the Demon Slayer Corps is a covert organization that has been fighting demons for centuries to exorcise them all. They are elite demon slayers tasked with protecting humans and ridding the world of demons.

In order to become a member of this organization, an individual must pass the Final Selection, a test used as an entrance exam to join the Demon Slayer Corps. Examinees must survive for seven days on a mountain top plagued with Demons without assistance from the outside world. Having survived this test, its shows you’re more than qualified to become a member.

Many lives have been sacrificed as a result of the test to demonstrate that it’s the real deal. Passing the test indicates that you are deserving of a place in the organization.

Muzan Kibutsuji character beginners guide to demon slayer corps by otherworlds inc

Muzan Kibutsuji

Voiced by Toshihiko Seki (Japanese) and Greg Chun (English)..

The series' major antagonist. He was reportedly the first human to be turned into a demon, and he has since worked toward his goal of becoming a perfect being by becoming immune to sunlight and having a family. Other inferior demons regard him as a god, as he bestows additional power on them with his blood and uses them to his advantage.

Muzan is a great antagonist, but he hasn't gotten much screen time in recent episodes, which I assume is because the show is still in its early stages. He believes that the Demon Slayer Corps is simply resisting the natural order of his supremacy as a demon.

The movie: Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

The success of the series’ first season led to the release of a movie sequel, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. A movie that has wreaked mayhem in Japanese theaters and around the world.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train picks up where the original anime left off. Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke board a train to join Flame Hashira Kyjur Rengoku on a mission to stop a demon from haunting the train. Ufotable Studio never ceases to amaze us with its incredible animation. This sequel is a must-watch after binge-watching the series.

Demon Slayer Season 2

According to Gameradar.com, Funimation states, a “7-episode miniseries complete with new visuals and background music” will recap the wildly successful Demon Slayer movie on October 10, 2021 before season 2 actually starts.

Those wanting to explore new ground will have to wait until December 5, 2021 where a one-hour premiere of the 'true' beginning of Demon Slayer season 2 will be shown.

Beginners Guide to Demon Slayer

In conclusion

With only one season under its belt, Demon Slayer is still in its early stage. It has a lot of potentials and given its current reputation, I can imagine it becoming one of the best anime of all time; amazing animations from Ufotable Studios, Soothing Ost and openings, Amazing Plot, and a fanatic fanbase.

If you enjoy Good animation, OPs, and EDs, you should watch this series. LiSa and Ufotable studios did an incredible job on this! A big thank you to her and everyone else who contributed to the show.

Now that you've got everything you need to start watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Relax and have fun! Thanks for the read.

Kindly share your thoughts in the comments section of our social media about what you think of the show.

Yuri on Ice

Yuri on ice promo image for top 10 sports anime of all time review by otherworlds inc

Now to an anime with a lot of fanservice! Yuri on Ice is a short figure skating series. Once upon a time, there was a young man, Yuri Katsugi with a big dream. He idolizes a well-known Russian figure skater and aspires to skate on the same ice as him. Yuri's dream was squashed at first after a crushing defeat until he was able to impress Victor by flawlessly imitating his routine. Victor is so taken with Yuri that he agrees to coach him at the Grand Prix Finals.

Even though the plot is simple (though the characters are anything but), the movie manages to keep viewers engaged despite the lack of big plot twists or shocking surprises. It's a lovely, relatable, hilarious, and hopeful tale. It portrays homosexuality in a way that is significantly distinct from the yaoi genre, and it has gotten a lot of appreciation for its unique perspective. If you don't support the LGBTQ+ Community, then this show isn’t for you.

The animation, as well as the soundtracks, are breathtaking.

2.

Hajime no Ippo

Hajime no Ippo promo image for top 10

Hajime no Ippo is another old but classic anime series that i'm sure you must have heard of it since its so popular. This show is one of the best underdog stories ever written, and there has never been an anime as inspiring and uplifting as it is.

He wishes to fight back and defend himself, but he can't as he's never been good at fighting, until a chance encounter with a boxer who exposes him to the cruel world of boxing and inspires him into becoming one. Ippo faces numerous obstacles in his quest to achieve his dreams of becoming stronger.

Hajime no Ippo is a fantastic anime that features character development, grit, and superb action. So, whether you're searching for motivation to start working out or simply change your life, Ippo's journey from being bullied to becoming a boxing pro is worth a look.

Prince of Tennis

I'm sure you already know what this anime is about from the title. The story revolves around Ryoma Echizen, a tennis prodigy who attends Seishun Academy, a school noted for its strong tennis club.

Ryoma shortly establishes himself as one of the team's regulars after defeating several upperclassmen shortly after joining, with the ultimate objective of surpassing his father, a legendary tennis player, and becoming Japan's best tennis player.

POT is without a doubt one of the best sports anime series out there; don't be put off by the fact that it goes back to 2000. It's amusing, inspirational, and ideal for watching when you're down as it instantly put you in a good mood. And believe me when I say that it is still relevant today.

It has likable characters, a cool intro, amazing soundtracks, and decent animation, making it highly addictive.

Made in Abyss: Redefining a word once feared

Written by Daichi

I wasn't a huge fan of anime from the start, and I was one of those naysayers if you know what I mean. Then I decided to give anime a go, and boy! I've become a full-fledged fan, just like everyone else. I grew up watching anime and have always enjoyed writing; I honed my skills by writing about anime as it comes naturally to me. My all-time favorite anime is FMAB.

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

5 Reasons You Should Start Playing LoL Wild Rift

League of Legends

Multiplayer online battle arena mobile games

I never expected to get obsessed over a mobile game, but LoL Wild Rift has me hooked. Not a day goes by when I don’t play at least a couple of matches. What’s more, for the first time in the many years of my on-again-off-again relationship with MOBAs, I’m actually playing Ranked.

The PC-bound League of Legends has been somewhat of a weird beast in my eyes. Aside from the toxic playerbase (which every game has), it’s felt quite inaccessible despite being a relatively easy game to jump into. You need to block off some serious time to get one match in. Also, the roster of Champions is beyond massive at this point.

All of this makes Wild Rift feel like a reset for LoL, making it the perfect place to jump into it.

Game Quote:

Wild West

LoL has always had an established metagame the playerbase expects you to follow. Even Riot has fully embraced it, though, without fully enforcing it. Not the case with PvP mode, though. Wild Rift’s equivalent to Casual is still in its wild west phase, which means you can play however you like. Sure, some players – including yours truly – will get upset with you for not picking a Support. But when you look at the enemy team, they’re also a bit of a jumble, so who cares?

Faster Matches

As mentioned above, LoL on PC requires you to make a sizeable time commitment with games clocking in at 45 minutes to over an hour. Not exactly great for busy people and gamer parents. On top of that, the game feels incredibly slow during the opening phases. Wild Rift shoots for matches that last at most 25 minutes. On average, I’d say my games fall on the 18-22 minute mark. Not only am I able to play more matches, but they’re also incredibly fast-paced. Laning goes by quite fast, especially if you have a jungler that’s solid at ganking.

Combat Tips

More Accessible

While League of Legends isn’t the most hardware-intensive game, you still need a decent computer to run it well. Wild Rift being on phones is nothing short of a godsend. It’s designed to be played by devices made in the last six years, which is incredibly forgiving. Heck, the game will run on phones still running Android Kit Kat. With these specs, it’s a lot easier even to get your friends involved.

Simpler Gameplay

LoL has never been the most complicated game to jump into. Its “easy to learn, hard to master” design is relatively well-known. Wild Rift takes that a step further by introducing elements from other mobile MOBAs. My favorite is the quick buy system. Once you’ve racked up enough gold, the game will offer you two choices for your next purchase. Wild Rift also doesn’t have potion items. Instead, scattered around the map and near turrets, you’ll find respawning plants that you can destroy to drop three healing orbs.

league-of-legends-wild-rift-champion 5 reasons you should start playing LoL wildrift

Relatively Generous

Compared to other free-to-play games out there, Wild Rift feels very generous with its Blue Motes currency. From simply playing an average of two games per day, I’ve been able to purchase pretty much every Champ I wanted from the current roster while still saving enough to buy 5-6 more Champions down the line. The most significant advantage is that new Champs don’t release at a higher price. Events, quests, and the free version of the Wild Pass also doll out many booster items for XP and Blue Motes.

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit Saddens Gamers

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit Saddens Gamers

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit

Gaming News

You’ve probably heard over the past few weeks about Activision Blizzard being sued by California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing. If you haven’t, I’ll fill you in.

It turns out that the company has been running a terrible workplace for a very long time, and their employees have finally been given a voice. It’s not an entirely surprising thing to hear, given that many mega-corporations nurture hostile working environments with terrible pay and benefits

For an old-timer gamer like myself, it isn’t something I would classify as “shocking news.” Nevertheless, it’s still regrettable when a gaming icon like Blizzard turns out to be one of the bad guys.

Gamer Quote:

Unknown

Failure doesn't mean the game is over, it means try again with experience.”

Feeling Conflicted about the Past

Some of my fondest gaming memories involved Blizzard titles. Running endless Starcraft: Broodwars LAN parties in musty internet cafes. Co-leading a World of Warcraft guild with my spouse. Losing entire days grinding in Diablo 2. These are all moments I cherish greatly as an old-school gamer.

Yet, when I hear that Blizzard’s workplace woes started a long time ago, I can’t help but feel some regret. There’s a sense of complicity that comes with giving such a company money. It almost feels like I was partaking in rewarding them for making games under such a terrible working culture.

All the times I cheered for the big reveals at every Blizzcon when the work actually came off the backs of developers who were treated to sexual harassment and other terrible behavior.

It’s a tough pill to swallow. Yes, I’m not the person who allowed this to happen. There was no way for me to know what was going on behind the doors of Blizzard’s Irvine-based offices. It’s hard to say if I’d grab the opportunity to take it all back, but I do know one thing for sure; Blizzard won’t see another dime from me.

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit

Can’t Enjoy the Future

Just as the news about Activision Blizzard’s lawsuit broke, my spouse mentioned above mused about how much fun we had playing WoW back in the day. My reply was a sobering “too bad we will never go back to it.” I meant every word of it. Even with some great titles on the horizon, such as Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, I’m not going to be picking up any more Blizzard games.

For one, my excitement for them has wholly been shattered. Games are supposed to be fun escapism, a delving into worlds where reality takes a back seat. Yet, how can I indulge when these games are not made with passion but greed and power moves at the forefront. The developers themselves are likely not to blame.

The executives at the top are uncaring and only take action when the press and public become aware. Be that as it may, there’s nothing ethical about publicly ridiculing women for wanting less sexualized characters in their video games. Business and principles can go hand-in-hand, and it’s up to Blizzard to prove to us that they can make it happen. Of course, that’s all contingent on them being able to make it through this ugly situation.

Has the PS5 Been a Worthwhile Purchase?

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

Has the PS5 Been a Worthwhile Purchase?

Playstation 5

Sony Playstation newest game console…

I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to get a PS5 a mere two months after launch. Like many gamers out there, I missed out on the initial batch that got ransacked by scalpers and a few luckier actual customers.

When I finally received notice that it was my turn in December 2020, I was overjoyed. It’s been nine months since my shiny new Sony console arrived, and looking back on it, I had to wonder if it was worth all the anxiety and frustration.

Fast Loading is a Gamechanger

It’s undeniable that the PS5 is an incredibly fast console. Sony wasn’t exaggerating when they described the speeds at which their next-gen console loads games. It feels like magic.

Especially for people who have minimal time to play games, the PS5’s loading speeds are a gamechanger. I no longer need to do the pre-loading rituals I used to where I turned on the console and went off to grab a drink while my game initialized. I can now just sit down and play. Even better, hopping onto another game doesn’t even require me to shut down the one I’m already playing. It’s really how gaming ought to be now.

Upgraded Backlog is More Enjoyable

We all know that the past months have been dubbed the Year of the Backlog, and for good reason. Next-gen new releases have been sparse, prompting people to tackle games they have yet to complete. The PS5 just makes all of that far more enjoyable.

What's the best PS5 game?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Gamer Quote:

Unknown

Games don't make you violent, lag does.”

What's better PS5 or Xbox Series X?

With so many titles getting free next-gen upgrades and others running a lot more smoothly thanks to the console’s spec boost, going through my backlog has never been a better experience.

Secondary PS4 Adds Versatility

This may not be universal, but I haven’t gotten rid of my PS4 since the new console arrived. Instead, it’s been sitting under our living room TV while my PS5 takes up the spot on my desk setup. I may be in the minority with this, but I feel having two consoles that can run the same games to be highly versatile.

With the PS5 having such limited storage capacity, my PS4 acts like an extra hard drive that allows me to enjoy more games whenever I feel like it. I also have access to gaming on both a computer monitor and a bigger 4K TV if I want to play something a bit more cinematic. Finally, it has enabled my spouse and me to play more multiplayer games together. With so few titles having couch co-op these days, having a second console has allowed us to enjoy even more titles together.

Overall, the PS5 has yet to give me the full next-gen experience. Its higher specs and unique features, however, have made it a worthwhile purchase despite that. With games like Deathloop on the horizon, it’s only a matter of time until my early adoption pays off.

Welcome to the N.H.K. is a Hidden Gem Anime

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

Welcome to the N.H.K. is a Hidden Gem Anime

Welcome to the N.H.K.

Manga and Comics

When it comes to anime or any form of media, we all have our share of hidden gems.

These are titles that don't let us think twice when giving anyone else that special, over the top, recommendation that will blow their mind away.

Some gems I recommend are:

Mononoke for the artistic horror.

Kids on the Slope for those who want to get drunk on a sweet romance they were never able to see for themselves.

91 Days brings back the good old mafia days while delivering a story that makes the hearts weep in complete unison.

Dorohedoro' makes us question what the hell we’re looking at for the entirety of its runtime.

It wouldn't be wrong to say that hidden gems are different personalities and individualities shining at their very best when it comes to the plethora of media and in this case, anime titles there are.

Yet, as we all know, some titles fail to see the light of day, whether it's for the right or wrong reasons. Many don’t get that level of attention.

Welcome to the N.H.K. is amazing and the perfect ‘out of the box’ idea that gives you that dose, that flavor of the harsh ‘main course’ that reality's about to hit you with, especially if you end up going down the same in the story.

Let's have a look at what exactly makes the title such a wonderful piece of art despite being as underrated as a show can get when anime is taken into consideration.

What is a NEET?

I'm pretty sure you've heard the terms NEET, recluse, shut-in, or straight up hikikomori somewhere on the internet before.

Welcome to the N.H.K. introduces you to those terms with Satou, a guy taking the bullet for all fans and anime otakus out there. He is ready to be that bad guy no one wants to be in any story.

Being inside a room that you deemed as your sanctuary for the better-half of your life with an allowance and all the modern amenities one could think of sounds like sweet comfortable dream, but are things ever really that simple?

Welcome to the N.H.K. explores the lives of several young adults around the city of Tokyo.

Each have different lifestyles, but one becomes the focus of the story, the concept of being a hikikomori. It is a term that means a reclusive individual who withdraws from society. Having most of the characters experience intense feelings of depression and loneliness, this anime covers important topics common in Japan.

Author Quote:

H.S. Crow

We yearn for a stranger to poke around in our heart. Such an irrational thing it is. Flutter once and lunacy behold.”

The beauty of life, and the luxury that the unpredictable brings.

Nothing's set in stone, especially when our own world is taken into consideration. With the world doing total 180's every couple of seconds, earning someone's trust is a feat a person should be proud of.

It's only natural that the shut-in Satou is going to be at a total loss of words when interacting with actual person, but when the guy next door blasting those anime opening songs and the mysterious ‘flyer distributor's’ assistant girl is destined to be your savior down the road… It won't be wrong to say that the chances of you foreseeing it happening by any means aren't that much higher from the digit zero we love to have in real life.

The way this anime portrays the different situations the protagonist has to overcome while Yamazaki and Misaki are there to help him with every step he takes is quite thrilling. Seeing him through his trials and tribulations while making sure he gets closer and closer to fit into the society he strayed from, shows the value companions and bonds bring.

In its truest sense the relationship between the characters is so beautiful, so wholesome that the title ends up giving you that dose of sweetness that a lot of people aren't expecting from a show like this.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

At a war with his own self, him against the entire world…

Visions force you to believe that you're nothing but a failure, voices tell you how you'd never amount to anything, and the mirror showing the person you hate most in the world, Welcome to the N.H.K. doesn't hold back on any punches.

Doubt, grief, paranoia and regret takes over Satou over and over again, the anime gives you a taste of the harsh reality we're all a part of, the cruel world we all live in. As they say, ‘a drowning man catches at a straw’, you see the man's desperation, trying to cling, hold on to anything that his fingers can get the slightest grasp of.

He is looking for something to save him, to drag him out of that abyss that he's sunk deep in, even if there is nothing but poison at the end of it all.

The psychological warfare with the different personalities having a go at it in a free-for-all without sugar coating anything is what makes the anime hit home for a lot of us and makes us witness hard truth… there's a massive world outside of our own room.

Combat Tips

A beautiful conclusion, a befitting end to a story that never should've existed..

Some might say that the anime is a lot to handle. I can agree with that to some extent, but in my opinion. The way the show does those turns, those detours down the road to arrive at the finish line is what made me totally hooked.

Seeing Satou's growth as he makes that transition, attempts that change what he was sure he'd never be able to pull off… it all shows how it's never too late for anyone out there.

From being a shut-in vampire where the slightest of love from the sun makes him burn to finally being able to walk around, travel, and have a normal conversation with any soul on the planet put a smile on my face. The character development and growth is nothing but a delight through and through.

Sure, parting ways with Yamazaki that was his brother-in-arms when it came to that ‘galge’ makes us shed a tear or two but the anime makes sure we aren't able to get a break at all with the last episode being one of the best any anime has ever brought to the screen. At least for me.

The Verdict

Through and through, Welcome to the N.H.K. is one of the most underrated titles out there and is for sure a name that deserves a lot more attention.

It has a unique concept with innovative settings that separates it from other anime out there. It executes the struggles one faces when put in that similar situation in such an accurate and real way that it’s hard to not be able to relate to the show in one way.

The show sure throws a lot at you during its ‘24 episode’ count. I was actually kind of amazed as to why people weren’t talking about this title a lot since despite it being a few years old at this point, it still hasn’t lost its impact one bit.

The anime making sure it hits you right in the feels over and over again, all while keeping up that mysterious aura that we can’t help but love to pieces.

Steam Deck May Broaden the PC Gaming Community

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

Steam Deck May Broaden the PC Gaming Community

Steam Deck

Valve's new handheld

The announcement of Valve’s upcoming portable gaming device, the Steam Deck, has made an explosive impression on gamers.

The magnitude of the bombshell Gabe Newell and his company dropped on us has left us all reeling, thirsty to get our hands on it. It’s easy to see why.

A portable device that aims to play every game in our Steam libraries is one of the most significant value propositions in video game history. And the gravity force of the massive black hole it will leave behind will suck more people into PC gaming.

For the longest time, playing games on a PC was viewed as a space for the hardcore, spec-hungry crowd. The Steam Deck will finally show that there’s room for casual gamers as well.

Simpler Game Settings

One of the most intimidating and/or frustrating aspects of PC gaming is adjusting settings. Whether you’re trying to get the best possible performance, the crispest visuals, or a balance between the two, it’s not a fun experience for the average gamer. I should know.

I’ve built gaming PCs, and even I find fiddling with settings tedious. The Steam Deck opens up possibilities to change that.

What drives most average gamers to consoles is their ease of use.

If Valve’s portable succeeds, devs will need to make it easy for users to get the correct settings without hassle. They can achieve this through profiles and recommendations that are easy for non-hardcore PC folk to understand while giving them the best possible experience for their hardware.

Glacias Collectors Volume Bookcover

Game Quote:

Javik, Mass Effect 3

Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls, and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer.”

Low Spec Legitimacy

The unsung heroes of PC gaming are the Low Spec Warriors, people with machines that run Steam games at medium to low settings. The Steam Deck can be the catalyst towards recognizing that these gamers are the primary sales drivers of PC titles.

The result could be games that are designed and developed to be playable on less powerful machines. Companies like Blizzard have been targeting our low-spec friends for a long time. Big games like Fortnite run respectfully well on borderline toasters.

A revolution that legitimizes their value can finally open up the world of PCs to more gamers and maybe even encourage them to dive into the deep end.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Steam Deck vs Nintendo Switch

Since its inception, the portable console market has been dominated by Nintendo. Despite the best efforts of Sony and Sega, the Big N’s stranglehold on the market has yet to be loosened. The Steam Deck could very well change that. With Nintendo constantly keeping itself out of the spec race, there’s an opportunity for Valve’s device to inspire other companies to make more powerful portables, opening up the floodgates to a yet-to-be-discovered audience.

The Steam Deck is as exciting a device as it gets at the moment. It can potentially change the way we see PC gaming by making it less about specs and more about how and when you can enjoy your games library.

Top 10 Anime for Beginners 2021

STORIES THAT ENCHANT THE MIND

Top 10 Anime For Beginners 2021

Top Best Anime To Start With

Great Starter Anime

Are you new to anime and have no idea where to begin?

If that's the case, you've come to the right place by checking out the Top 10 Anime for beginners 2021.

Anime has recently grown in popularity worldwide as more anime episodes are made available through various popular video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and others. As a newbie, it's difficult to know where to start with literally hundreds of different series to pick from and practically every genre available, from Rom-com to action, school dramas, and even sports.

I've been watching anime for over 15 years and consider myself a bit of an expert on the subject. Allow me to serve as your guide in ranking the ideal anime for you as a newbie.

This list will include fan-favorite anime that are only a season or two long, allowing new viewers to stay up with the story without having to watch over 100+ episodes.

The majority of popular anime appears to be incredibly long, with over 200+ episodes, which can be a turnoff for newbies.

Keep in mind that this list is not in any specific order.

Also, this isn't a list of the greatest anime ever produced. It's a list of good anime that don't need an introduction and are good places to start for new anime viewers. Hopefully, you'll find something to your liking on this list. Enjoy!

10.

Vinland saga

I just recently watched this anime and loved it! A fantastic piece! The Vinland Saga is a historical animation with a dash of adventure and action, taking us way back to 1013 AD England, under the reign of the Danish invaders known as Vikings.

This anime also shows historical events from England's history, making it informative while remaining entertaining. With only 24 episodes, you'll be completely engrossed in the rich plot and adventure. This is an anime worth watching for a newbie.

Not too long, not too complicated. Fans are eagerly anticipating Season 2, as there is still more to discover. Check out this anime and join the crew of the ship sailing to Vinland ;).

Mangaka Quote:

Hiromu Arakawa

The world isn't perfect. But it's there for us, doing the best it can….that's what makes it so damn beautiful.”

-Roy Mustang

9.

Sword Art Online

Sword art online, abbreviated and popularly known as SAO, is a New Generation isekai (another world) series packed with action, adventure, a smidgeon of romance, and an incredible plot.

Fast forward to 2022, when advanced VR online gaming became a thing, and players could leave the physical world and enter a virtual one to play games. Isn’t that cool?!

The game SAO was created, and thousands of gamers, including the protagonist (Kirito), logged on but were unable to log out. Hence trapped and won’t be released until after clearing all 100 stages of the game; death in the game also means death in the real world. SICK right?! You should check it out to see how it ends out.

8.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

One of the most well-known New Generation Shonen series, winning the anime of the year award in 2019. A creation of Ufotable studio (best known for their high-budget animation).

Packed with amazing battle scenes, demons, superpowers, adventure, and martial arts.

Traveling around in search of a cure to revert his sister back into human.

After completing the series, you should watch the sequel, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. This is a must-see! Let's take a look at some other genres since we've been talking about action for a while.

7.

Kuroko no Basket

You probably already know what this anime is about based on the title. “But what if I'm not a sports fan or a basketball fan?” you might wonder. Perhaps you're thinking. Well, I wasn't myself, and I found myself appreciating basketball as a result of this anime depiction of the sport. I even went through the effort of learning how to ball 😉

4.

Assassination classroom

Writing about this anime brings back a lot of memories! KORO SENSEI! BITCH SENSEI!

At first, I thought the plot funny, as I couldn't understand why a powerful alien-like being would volunteer to teach a particular class while also training the pupils to assassinate him to save the Earth.

There would undoubtedly be a backstory to it, and they did not disappoint me as it later turned out to be an incredible story. This anime is unquestionably an excellent series for newbies, packed with funny scenes, teamwork, and, of course, assassinations.

Also, the final episodes were emotional. A must-see series.

jujutsu is a New Generation Shonen series that aired between late 2020 and March 2021. Popular and loved by fans. Jujutsu has a tale that is similar to Naruto but different.

The plot follows a high school student, Yuji Itadori who joins a secret group of Jujutsu Sorcerers in order to slay Ryomen Sukuna, a strong Curse of whom he becomes the host.

A MAPPA studio production packed with battle scenes, extraordinary powers, and a fantastic plot.

1.

Full-Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

FMAB is my all-time favorite anime, I feel it is underrated as it does not receive the recognition it deserves. You can never go wrong with FMAB if you're new to anime.

Following the story of the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse set out on a mission to retrieve their bodies after an attempt to resurrect their deceased mother went wrong, leaving them in a physically damaged state.

While hunting for answers, they begin to unravel hidden mysteries, which adds to the intrigue of the plot. This anime is packed with action, suspense, and interesting characters. FMAB is a wonderful choice if you appreciate sci-fi, adventure, historical fiction, and a splash of magic.

This listing only scratches the surface, but it will offer you a taste of different story ideas and animation styles to get you started.
