Anime has recently grown in popularity worldwide as more anime episodes are made available through various popular video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and others. As a newbie, it's difficult to know where to start with literally hundreds of different series to pick from and practically every genre available, from Rom-com to action, school dramas, and even sports.

I've been watching anime for over 15 years and consider myself a bit of an expert on the subject. Allow me to serve as your guide in ranking the ideal anime for you as a newbie.

This list will include fan-favorite anime that are only a season or two long, allowing new viewers to stay up with the story without having to watch over 100+ episodes.

The majority of popular anime appears to be incredibly long, with over 200+ episodes, which can be a turnoff for newbies.

Keep in mind that this list is not in any specific order.

Also, this isn't a list of the greatest anime ever produced. It's a list of good anime that don't need an introduction and are good places to start for new anime viewers. Hopefully, you'll find something to your liking on this list. Enjoy!

Vinland saga

I just recently watched this anime and loved it! A fantastic piece! The Vinland Saga is a historical animation with a dash of adventure and action, taking us way back to 1013 AD England, under the reign of the Danish invaders known as Vikings.

This anime also shows historical events from England's history, making it informative while remaining entertaining. With only 24 episodes, you'll be completely engrossed in the rich plot and adventure. This is an anime worth watching for a newbie.

Not too long, not too complicated. Fans are eagerly anticipating Season 2, as there is still more to discover. Check out this anime and join the crew of the ship sailing to Vinland ;).

Sword Art Online

Sword art online, abbreviated and popularly known as SAO, is a New Generation isekai (another world) series packed with action, adventure, a smidgeon of romance, and an incredible plot.

Fast forward to 2022, when advanced VR online gaming became a thing, and players could leave the physical world and enter a virtual one to play games. Isn’t that cool?!

The game SAO was created, and thousands of gamers, including the protagonist (Kirito), logged on but were unable to log out. Hence trapped and won’t be released until after clearing all 100 stages of the game; death in the game also means death in the real world. SICK right?! You should check it out to see how it ends out.

8.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

One of the most well-known New Generation Shonen series, winning the anime of the year award in 2019. A creation of Ufotable studio (best known for their high-budget animation).

Packed with amazing battle scenes, demons, superpowers, adventure, and martial arts. Demon slayers, as the name suggests, are a group of samurai who hunt and kill demons.

The tale revolves around a kind-hearted teen Tanjiro Kamado, who sets out to become a demon slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister Nezuko was turned into a demon. Traveling around in search of a cure to revert his sister back into human.

After completing the series, you should watch the sequel, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. This is a must-see! Let's take a look at some other genres since we've been talking about action for a while.

7.

Kuroko no Basket

You probably already know what this anime is about based on the title. "But what if I'm not a sports fan or a basketball fan?" you might wonder. Perhaps you're thinking. Well, I wasn't myself, and I found myself appreciating basketball as a result of this anime depiction of the sport. I even went through the effort of learning how to ball 😉

I'm sure you'll feel the same way. One of the shows that is pushing the sport genre in new directions. With characters that had exceptional skills, the show became a lot more interesting.

You'll definitely appreciate this series as it's gripping and full of suspense, with each episode ending on a cliffhanger. After completing the series, you should check out the sequel, Kuroko no basket; The last game. A must see!

5.

Toradora

YA lovely high school series about a delinquent-looking but extremely nice guy (Takasu Ryuji) and a wild tsundere (Aisaka Taiga) who resolve to help each other with their crushes. Obviously, things didn't go as planned.

A rom-com series filled with heartwarming and funny scenes. Loved every bit of the series.

Half way down the Top 10 Anime for beginners 2021 list!

4.

Assassination classroom

Writing about this anime brings back a lot of memories! KORO SENSEI! BITCH SENSEI!

At first, I thought the plot funny, as I couldn't understand why a powerful alien-like being would volunteer to teach a particular class while also training the pupils to assassinate him to save the Earth.

There would undoubtedly be a backstory to it, and they did not disappoint me as it later turned out to be an incredible story. This anime is unquestionably an excellent series for newbies, packed with funny scenes, teamwork, and, of course, assassinations.

Also, the final episodes were emotional. A must-see series.

Jujutsu Kaisen

jujutsu is a New Generation Shonen series that aired between late 2020 and March 2021. Popular and loved by fans. Jujutsu has a tale that is similar to Naruto but different.

The plot follows a high school student, Yuji Itadori who joins a secret group of Jujutsu Sorcerers in order to slay Ryomen Sukuna, a strong Curse of whom he becomes the host.

A MAPPA studio production packed with battle scenes, extraordinary powers, and a fantastic plot.

1.

Full-Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

FMAB is my all-time favorite anime, I feel it is underrated as it does not receive the recognition it deserves. You can never go wrong with FMAB if you're new to anime.

Following the story of the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse set out on a mission to retrieve their bodies after an attempt to resurrect their deceased mother went wrong, leaving them in a physically damaged state.

While hunting for answers, they begin to unravel hidden mysteries, which adds to the intrigue of the plot. This anime is packed with action, suspense, and interesting characters. FMAB is a wonderful choice if you appreciate sci-fi, adventure, historical fiction, and a splash of magic.

This listing only scratches the surface, but it will offer you a taste of different story ideas and animation styles to get you started.

I wasn't a huge fan of anime from the start, and I was one of those naysayers if you know what I mean. Then I decided to give anime a go, and boy! I've become a full-fledged fan, just like everyone else. I grew up watching anime and have always enjoyed writing; I honed my skills by writing about anime as it comes naturally to me. My all-time favorite anime is FMAB.
